The Ukranian Prisoner-of-War Chapel at Hallmuir.

Model of Kiev Cathedral, hand-carved using a penknife.

The camp at Hallmuir comprised about forty single-storey huts made of corrugated iron, and Sir John Buchanan Jardine (who owned the land) allocated one of these buildings to be used as a church for the prisoners-of-war.

At first, the inside of the hut was simple and unadorned but, over the course of time and with incredible patience, imagination and skill, the men transformed the interior, with its panoply of hand-crafted objects, into what can still be seen in all its glory today. For example, there are candlesticks made from old shell casings, hand-painted religious pictures, a large and colourful chandelier fashioned out of old coat hangers and fencing wire, and, perhaps most impressive of all, a splendidly detailed model of the bombed Kiev Cathedral, carved by hand using a simple penknife. A letter from Historic Scotland, dated December 2003, which is displayed in the chapel comments that the building is an ‘evocative reminder of wartime spirit, and the way the prisoners found ways to overcome the privations of their situation.’ Services are still held at the chapel, which can accommodate approximately fifty people.
